It would be an immense spiritual exercise for you -- to succumb to your insecurities and your critics and live a lie. I think it would be so painful for you that once it's over, your own individual artistry would be affirmed. But I think, in the end, it would be pointless, because the answer you seek from the exercise has already been affirmed within you. I think you'll get some great answers to the question of individuality/conformity if you read Joseph Campbell's first book in his Masks of God series, Primitive Mythology. He talks about the role of the shaman in primitive cultures, and how it's very similar to the role of the artist today. The shaman/artist is both hated and revered by the conformist tribe, but ultimately, the shaman/artist is the one that pushes everyone else forward, whether they like it or not.
