Yes, you can listen and give advise but your friend needs professional help. I had a good friend commit suicide and the crazy thing is there was not a single sign about it, which still confuses me to this day. I desperately wished everyday that she would have shared how she felt and that I could have helped her. So, the best thing that you can do for your friend is to keep him safe and get help.
