I've posted a brief analysis of this. Please note I am not saying @gaga copied Judy Garland no no no! I'm just pointing out the links between these two incredible rare performances so here's my "Over the Dope Theory" to mark the 60th and 2nd anniversary of these performances.
Yesterday I watched a video someone posted online which marked 60 years since Judy Garland gave this very rare performance of Over the Rainbow. m.youtube.com/... Then I read 2 years ago around this very time Lady Gaga was promoting her upcoming-album-back-then ARTPOP; she gave a rare performance at the YouTube Awards of one of her songs, the ballad Dope. youtu.be/...
It wasn't until 3 am this morning that some analysis just flashed my brain! Although both performances were 58 years apart, there happened to be similarities in stage presence, background and in both their music.
Garland and Gaga were dressed as tramps (however Gaga was more modern hip-gangster) as they wanted to show to their audiences the sense of loneliness, sadness and help- this was really significant by the way they were whining and properly crying on stage. Speaking of these emotions, both female icons were battling with personal and career dilemmas throughout their lives, that the only way to heal their pain was the turn to drugs and alcohol. Sadly Garland died from an overdose 15 years later, however Gaga today has remained strong and penned Dope, to open up about her regrets to warn her fans about how much of a downfall it could do. Over the Rainbow and Dope both have this longing for freedom and hope. Garland's was originally written for The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy was yearning for an adventure. On this occasion Garland "the tramp" may have performed this to reflect her personal problems and imagined "over the rainbow" to be a place where she wanted to leave her troubled past behind, but was restricted due to the pressure of her fame "why oh why can't I?". Gaga similarly was "searching for an answer cause I need you more then dope", again like Garland she wished to abandon the "dope" having "fucked up again", and "up Heaven's stairway to gold" is her own destiny "over the rainbow". I have also noticed 2 musical similarities. Firstly it's that famous octave leap in Over the Rainbow which also appears in Dope! It is the very first two notes of Over the Rainbow where this happens ("Somewhere") whereas in Dope it is in the middle of the choruses ("living high"). A source I read said this leap is "between two different worlds"; the lower note being Garland/Dorothy's and Gaga's "troubled reality", and then the upper note being the place to "escape". We know that "Somewhere" is definitely Oz whereas Gaga's "high" note means something different which possibly highlights the strong effects of the "dope". There is also a leap of a 6th in both songs; "THERE'S A land" for Over the Rainbow which is an ascending leap and "My heart would BREAK WITHOUT you" in Dope as a descending leap. Secondly, take the chord progression of the chorus in Dope (Eb/Bb/Cm/Ab) and put the melody of Over the Rainbow to it and (forget the fourth bar which has a bit of a clash) the first three bars of the mash up fit rather well. I was wondering if Gaga was aspired by Judy Garland's incredible performance of the Wizard of Oz hit which helped her one way or another to write/picture the song? Mind you her Wizard of Oz version of Applause on Good Morning America when Gaga was dressed as Dorothy, singing Over the Rainbow before her own song, could have been a link to something... youtu.be/...
However both Over the Rainbow and Dope's live performances painted these raw emotions that made their showcases more alive; their struggles were what made them so relatable and authentic and that is how these performances have come to be so special. ππΌ
