Why can't you be like them?

Because that is not me, I replied. How many times have you heard that from family and friends? Or you can tell by the looks that strangers give you. Or you have been told that by teachers? Being an individual is what is preached, but then when you are yourself you still get criticized. This was me. I thought that if I conformed people would get off my back. It was only a temporary fix. Finally, I went back to being true to who I was. Growing up in a small town, where literally everyone knows everyone, it was difficult. Those who bullied me, I just turned and walked away or ignore the chatter. I knew who I was and I also knew that at least, I was not fake! IMO, those who were quick to say something to, may have been jealous because I had the courage to remain true, and they had to follow specific guidelines because of their family. Be yourself always!! Sometimes we have to ignore what others say about us in order not to destroy our self confidence and also because not everything we hear about ourselves it’s true. Just because someone thinks you’re ugly doesn’t mean that you are and just because you don’t wanna study X or work as Y, doesn’t mean that you’re a failure. On the other hand, sometimes we do need to understand the criticism we get. Sometimes people do have a point and sometimes our wake-up call comes from outside. Maybe a few comments from your family or friends or even a stranger can help us sit back and look at the big picture, weigh the things they said with the things we believe in and in the end, we might end up ignoring it or perhaps implementing it in our lives and finding it to be more comfortable. I believe one should focus on creating themselves rather than just “being themselves”. I don’t belong to any group or community, I’m just Reno. I have my own ideas yet I’m always updating myself and always exchanging thoughts. We’re in a constant process of growth and the more we learn about the world, the more we change. This is life.
