I Was at The Cheek to Cheek TV Taping Last Night
Firstly - Thank you LM.com for gifting the tickets to me and my friend! I WAS SO EXCITED TO WIN!! No cameras were allowed. We were warned they'd be confiscated and we would be escorted out of the theater!
I saw Starlight talking to some people inside the Rose Theatre entrance, so we knew Tony & Gaga were coming. We watched as they came into the building.
My friend and I had box seats on stage left. We could look down directly on top of T&G! Most everyone, young and old, Gaga fans and Tony fans, were "dressed to the nines" There were students from his music school that were in the very front row, who clearly adored her and the show and Gaga often sang directly to them. Her parents were in the audience, as was her grandmother!
There was a FULL JAZZ ORCHESTRA! I thought it was just going to be a quartet. There was the basic drums, piano, bass and guitar. And there was a brass section of 4 trumpets, 4 saxophones, 4 trombones, and then there was also a string orchestra of a bunch of violins and violas! His band played 5 songs alone, before T & G came out. For some of her songs, Brian Newman’s band played with her. For the last song (Goody Goody) Chris Botti and AMAZING trumpeter played (and an unknown saxophonist) and THEY BLEW THE HOUSE DOWN!
Gaga changed outfits throughout the night – One gold lame gown, a dark silver gown, a black gown, a green gown. She mostly had her own hair in a bun – But she also wore that large curly wig for a number of songs. There were a couple of songs where 6 dancers (which I've since learned were Brian Newman's wife and her dancers ) were on stage for a couple of songs with lots of big feathery outfits! It was such fun!
Tony’s energy is amazing for an 88 year old man. Often times the power in his voice was AMAZING! The notes he would hold and belt out were incredible for anyone, let alone someone his age.
Gaga's rendition of Lush Life was PERFECTION. Even better than that video that was posted a couple of weeks back.
What songs did they do? I can’t remember them all, Goody Goody, Sophisticated Lady, Lush Life, Cheek to Cheek, Bang Bang, Nature Boy, Let’s Face the Music and Dance, I Can't Give You Anything But Love – Tony sang a few songs I didn’t recognize. It must have been the whole freaking album. I’m sure they’re going to take the best performances for the hour show that airs in October, and put them on a DVD and then when PBS pitches for money, the DVD will have additional songs (they often do that as an incentive to buy the DVD).
Her vocals…What can I say? The passion, the energy, the power, the beauty of the notes… Her voice really shone in this style. Her phrasing was impeccable. She wasn't confined by pop music standards and could express the true power and richness of her voice. She was definitely channeling Ella Fitzgerald in one song in particular. She was very playful and free and said this was one of the best times she’s ever had. Periodically, when they would stop taping, fans would shout out “I love you Gaga” and of course ,she would respond “I love you too” She was clearly loving her time on stage. She would often dance with Tony, and rub his back. Tony seemed almost shocked that the audience responded so vociferously and strongly to their performances.
This was a beautiful, extraordinary experience that I will NEVER FORGET.
