Just like you, I am me
Just like you, I am me
I saw this video, and instantly thought of Little Monsters.
Please take a minute and watch this video, or read the transcript below. I say this to myself as much as I say this to you all, I am me, just like you are you. what makes us different is what unites us. In the video the teacher talks about how growing up he was bullied, as for me, I wasn't bullied by my peers, but I was bullied by my own thoughts. I've always been overweight, and that's been an issue for me, not that I want to be skinny, but i have always just felt uncomfortable. Luckily I found a wife who loves me for who I am, but that doesn't mean that my struggles are any easier.
I am me, You are you. rather than point out our differences, we should celebrate what makes us equal, and that is in the things that are "different" but different in a good way.
I urge all of you who see this, if you truly are dealing with more serious things, Please please please contact someone who can get you the help that you need and deserve.
**Video Transcript** *Chow Yiu-Fai: This is a death notice I read from a Dutch newspaper recently. This is a 20-year-old boy from the Netherlands. After his suicide, his parents included his suicide note in the death notice
" Dear mum and dad, all my life I have been ridiculed, abused, bullied, and that's why I chose to leave. I hope you won't be angry with me," Tim Ribberink, 1992-2012.
Going through the news reports on his suicide, I was shocked that his parents had been completely ignorant of the pain their son had been going through.
When I was young, or even now, I have never been very "macho". In secondary school, everyone is trying to find their own position in the new environment. Some choose to prove their existence through bullying others. There was once, during recess or something, two classmates suddenly came up to me and said, "I know why you are such a 'sissy'. Because yoou don't have a father." I was all alone throughout my secondary school years. I know that I am different from the "normal" boys.
This young man was 20-years-old, about the same age as all of you are. Suddenly, I come to wonder, out of the 30-something students in this classroom, how many of you are actually going through such torment? We can never know. I hope you will have the strength to stand up and say, "So what?" And if you come across someone who is being bullied, "So what? You still have me on your side." Keep this in mind.
Why are you crying?
I hope that our school can be an environment in which you can retain your youthfulness and innocence, to learn and to grow up without fear. Yet, there is a dark side to this beautiful vision we overlook all too often.
I Am Me. I am Chow Yiu-Fai. If you are now suffering from bullying, I want you to know that you are not alone. It's neither your problem nor your fault. We are all here for you. I hope that our world could one day be free from such pain.*
