I have a suggestion. I think the picture would look 10x better if it was in colour. Now there is a way you can easily do this. With GIMP (or photoshop) use the free select tool to trace around the area you want to colour. Now when you have a closed area right click it and select Colourise and select the colour you want the grey area to be. I would experiment with the settings, but be sure to note down the hue number as you'll want the areas to have same colour. :)
