So first off, even though I’m not 18 till next month( as the contest rules specify), I thought this would be a great opportunity to share with others about my bold impact in my community. I’m one of the founding members of the committee called 'Healing Connections’. Healing Connections is committed to engaging, educating, advocating, and organizing our community with a focus on suicide and other Mental Health related issues. Two years ago, I was president of my class at that time and our community was going through an epidemic. We lost 4 youth in just 2 1/2 years. Two of which were from my class, I was distraught and saddened by everything that was occurring that I decided to go to the district and ask the simple question “What else can I do to reach out to my classmates?”. Next thing you know a week later, a committee was formed with school administrators, student leaders, mental health organizations, the ministerial association and the city in coalition to help be that connection from the student to the resources by spreading awareness. Last year we did Resource Fairs at the local schools and Parent Night assemblies. This month the Monrovia Healing Connection Committee is sponsoring a city-wide campaign called "March 4 Balance”. The campaign kicked-off at the City Council meeting last Tuesday March 4th with a proclamation by the City Council. Between March 5th – 23rd, our Healing Connections Task Force will be visiting organizations such as service clubs, teen commissions, churches, and other community based gatherings to promote what we are doing locally to aid and support community members dealing with emotional and psychological issues The picture posted is of last Tuesday at the City Council meeting when March 2014 was declared March 4 Balance: Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Awareness month.
