First Gay Character on Disney
First Gay Character on Disney
"The Disney Channel, launched in 1983, has so far never featured any LGBT characters.
That is set to change in early 2014 when an episode of its series Good Luck Charlie features a family with two moms.
TV Guide reports that in the storyline, series parents Amy and Bob Duncan have set up a playdate for their preschooler Charlie and one of her new friends. They find out when the child arrives at their home that she has two moms. The tension is not from the fact that the women are lesbians but from one of them being stuck listening to dull stories told by Bob.
Although the lesbian characters are part of a one-time subplot on an episode, a spokesman tells TV Guide that 'this particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors.' 'Like all Disney Channel programming,' the spokesman added, 'it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.' "
