Open Letter to Gaga, Kelly, and Mrs. O
Open Letter to Gaga, Kelly, and Mrs. O
Dear Gaga, Kelly, and Mrs. Osbourne,
I am writing this letter because I am heavily disturbed by the war of words that has been going on the past few days. I am a fan of the three of you strong women, but I have to say I am extremely disappointed with the nonsense I have been hearing and reading.
Gaga,
I have been a HUGE fan since I saw your performance of Paparazzi at the 2009 VMAs. I heard your music before and liked it, but it was that performance that really made me fall in love with your music and your message. You have been a support system for me since I was in high school, even though we have never met. I’ve followed your work since then even when the people around me didn’t quite understand why and made fun of me for my admiration. You gave me a strong woman to look up to.
When you and your beautiful mother, Cynthia, began the Born This Way Foundation I was so elated. You both proved that you wanted to do more than talk the talk. You both wanted to take action and make this world a better place. My mother, who at first did not comprehend my admiration for you, began to understand what I loved about you and has contributed to the Born This Way Foundation. You are a beautiful woman and I will always support your message of love.
Kelly,
I’ve been following your family since The Osbournes aired on MTV, even though I was too young and probably shouldn’t have been watching MTV. I loved watching your family because you were a dysfunctional family like the rest of us. I was instantly drawn to you because of your struggle. I always heard others criticize your weight. As a child I was constantly told I was fat and ugly. I know it was painful for me to hear those things and I knew it had to be painful for you, too.
When I heard you would be competing on Dancing With The Stars, I knew I was going to cheer for you. I saw you transform in multiple ways along with your dance partner Louis Van Amstel. You gained self-confidence and your growing self-esteem radiated every night you stepped on the dance floor. It was so inspiring to see you transform as a woman! It was more than just loosing weight, it was gaining a love for yourself and it was beautiful to watch. By growing on the show you proved to your critics that you were in charge and nothing was going to bring you down. That is why I love you, Kelly.
Mrs. Osbourne,
As noted above, I enjoyed watching your family on MTV. I had so much respect for how you kept the family in check. When you were diagnosed with Colon Cancer and your chances of survival were so low, I was truly saddened. You beat the cancer and I knew you were a strong woman to look up to. While I had always admired your strength as a mother and as a woman, it wasn’t until recently that I really understood how amazing you really are.
In 2012, you underwent a double mastectomy as a preventative measure. I was in absolute awe when I read about your procedure. As a woman, you decided to value your health and life more than your looks, which is hard for women in our society to do. You showed women around the world that breasts do not make a woman and I applaud your for your bravery.
Gaga, Kelly, and Mrs. O,
I am not writing this letter to defend one’s actions over the other. I am writing this letter in hopes that the three of you can see how you have been a positive influence on a young woman, like myself. I want you to realize how you all have broken a bit of the glass ceiling.
As women, it is important for you all to use your celebrity status to break the barriers that women and other minorities continue to face. Your participation in this war of words only keeps us from overcoming barriers. While society continues to degrade women, it is important for us to stick together. I understand that it is naïve to believe that we will all like each other just because we are women, but I don’t think it is impossible to put our differences aside to be a positive influence to others.
I ask for the nonsense to end now! Instead of satisfying the Media’s sweet tooth, move forward and continue to be the strong women I look up to. Continue to inspire young women and men to be the best they can be. Continue to encourage young people to love themselves, even when society tells them not to.
I hope the three of you will take the time to read this letter and move forward from this bump in the road. Do not allow the media to take control of this matter. Be the strong women and role models I know you are.
Love and Respect,
Arisela
