I had surgery too about a decade ago. My back isn't exactly "normal" now, and of course I've got a major scar, but what's so beautiful about it is that it's so much a part of me. Not to mention it still blows my mind that they used a donor bone graft for the vertebral fusions - that never ceases to amaze me. Surgery ranks high among the good decisions I've made in my life, but as for actually loving my back (something I never thought I'd ever feel) – the day I realized I had so many more reasons to love my back than hate it and it had become this strong, powerful part of me, I chose to start loving it, and I keep making that choice constantly.
