Happy 10 Years of ARTPOP!
Happy 10 Years of ARTPOP!
I love all of Gaga's music and her evolution as an artist, but there's something about ARTPOP that I just love. I think it was her artistic freedom and creative spirit and you can hear it throughout the album. It's a carefree and experimental pop album that was ahead of it's time.
I remember getting the deluxe version of ARTPOP for Christmas when I was 14 years old and I gazed at the cover for at least five minutes because it was better seeing it in person rather than watching a YouTube video 🤣 (shoutout to Misty Monster and Clevver Music, if you remember them).
Applause was a perfect choice for the lead. I remember rushing home from high school just to watch the video as it was the first Gaga video since Marry the Night and it was a pop art spectacle, a feast for the eyes and nothing like her previous videos, it was artistic and expressive. As much as I love Do What U Want (Xtina version), I still wish Venus was the second single. Imagine the video we would've gotten for Venus and Aura too.
I love ARTPOP as a whole. My favourite song is Swine. I relate to that song more now than I did when I was 14 as I have went through a similar experience to Gaga between the ages of 19 and 21 (late 2018 - mid-2020) because of this person who used to be in my life for nearly two years. I had to cut this person out of my life because all they brought was drama, chaos, confusion and hell for me. My favourite part of the song is the buildup to the drop. Zedd did a fantastic job on the production of this song as well as Aura (another favourite of mine!)
I had a lot of emotional anger from these events and my mental health suffered as a result as I had lost my gran to dementia two weeks before my 21st birthday (January 2020), I thought my life was over, a living hell and I had no purpose of living.
I used alcohol as a way to cope with my pain and was getting drunk for the sake of it. It was a dark place that I never thought I would get out of and I had a lot of questions, but no answers. I turned to music as a source of comfort, ARTPOP and Chromatica came at the right time for me during the pandemic and I applaud Gaga immensely for releasing Chromatica at a time when I really needed it the most like we all did, I'd also say Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa and After Hours by The Weeknd also helped me. They were my top 3 albums of 2020.
Personally, for me, I wouldn't be here without ARTPOP and Chromatica (and Gaga's other albums that I'll always treasure), but mainly ARTPOP and Chromatica, respectively, because they got me through my mental health struggles and I managed to see the sun light shine through the trees and come out the other side into a much more happier, calmer place.
Gaga's music has always stuck with me since I was 10 years old beginning with Just Dance in 2009. When I was growing up, I always felt different and unaccepted around other people, they made fun of me and bullied me, called me gay because I liked pop music and I had a creative imagination. But knowing Gaga also suffered from bullying at school, she accepted everybody who felt like they didn't fit in and I love her messaging about it - The Monster Ball speech still gets to me to this day! As of 2023, I'm in a much better and happier place than I was three years ago.
On a lighter note, ARTPOP has been a favourite album of mine and within the community of Little Monsters around the world. We as fans understood Gaga's vision, art and purpose and have never forgotten it. We have always managed to keep the spirit and legacy of ARTPOP alive even 10 years later to this day. We always believed it was ahead of it's time! And it rightfully and respectfully deserves it's praise, especially 10 years later. Free my mind, ARTPOP, you make my heart stop!
