GAY, LESBIAN, TRANSGENDER, STRAIGHT AND BI SEXUAL MONSTERS - READ THIS
I'm doing a major on Lady Gaga's influence in regards to societies changing values and ethics towards homosexuality, do you feel that she has been an influential factor to this change?
Please give reasons, experiences and elaborated answers!
I really need your help with this monsters
I think she has been influencial due to the fact that she has worked deeply within the gay community since the start of her career, when to talk about and be open about different sexualities was almost seen as "taboo". Nowadays, after her influence, this view is not as widely believed. Also, as well as her influence as a singer and an important figure in show business, she has had a large political influence due to the rally she spoke at to repeal the law "Don't ask, Don't tell". She explained that whether gay, straight or bi, one is entitled to serve their country, regardless of sexuality. Before this political rally, she brought service members of the U.S military who were affected by DADT to the 2010 VMAs to tell the world that they deserved recognition for their service to their country, and that their sexuality should not come as an obstical to persuing a military career. Also, she has made prejudices towards the gay community outdated and less common due to the charity she runs with her mother, the Born This Way Foundation. I don't think she has completely changed the opinions of societies towards homosexuality, as there will always be people with old, outdated morals and prejudices. However, I think she has had a huge influence to the ideas towards the gay community as young people who admire her could have had similar ideas and prejudices to older generations, whereas...
I agree with Hidden Woman--it is very hard to get people to change their minds when they have been brought up believing a certain thing...all those grandparents who just insist that homosexuals are evil, we really can't blame them. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks; you also can't always get them to change their opinions. They are just too deeply ingrained and I think we need to stop worrying or even thinking about that generation. What Gaga does is what I think is most important: she is speaking to the younger generation, a generation of people who are questioning the world around them and still very "mold-able" :) That is the group that is going to start the change, and it's clear even from just looking around at the sheer NUMBER of people on this site that she has made a huge impact on the views of younger people. They will pass on those views and hopefully start a cycle of greater and greater acceptance. I also think that her use of social media is huge; in this world where everyone is so connected via internet, etc., it seems that we are constantly meeting people who defy stereotypes and force us to rethink our values. Being challenged like that is such a gift; it opens our minds and teaches acceptance in a way that sheer lecturing cannot. By using that social media as a way to communicate with her fan base Gaga contributes to that massive gathering off all...
I believe our society is in a transition as it was in the 1960's during the Civil Rights Movement. During that period there were societal and political figures, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, who were at the forefront of the movement. I believe that Gaga is now one of these powerful cultural figures who people are listening to in regards to the "LGBT Rights Movement." Of course the all accepting and love for all musical subject matters are what people outside the little monster community noticed first but I believe her Prime Meat speech in Washington DC was her first major and public attempt to bring awareness to the obsurdity of Don't Ask Don't Tell. Moreover, bringing discharged homosexual soldiers under the DADT law to the VMA's was also another classic Mother Monster overt way to let the world know what she believes is right. Once President Obama repealed DADT she moved on to the next chapter in the LGBT Rights Movement. Presently, her work with her mother in the Born This Way Foundation is concentrating on eliminating bullying in schools and over social networking sites. She set up this very site we are using now in an ingenious attempt to create and online safe haven for all us monsters. Speaking with school administrators, those who have been bullied, as well as bullies themselves on Oprah's Next Chapter, she is hoping to not only stop bullying, but to get...
Gaga is influential because she combines glorious talent with her message of love and acceptance (of others and oneself), clearly something the world has been yearning for. Gaga is also unique because she not only speaks of these things, but leads by example. She IS the change she wishes to see in the world, and it inspires others to follow suit. I could go on forever ;-) Best of luck with your work!
I think that she is doing a lot to eliminate prejudices that are old as the world...she can't change it all in such a little time but she is very influential. Maybe an old man (not for the age but for the ideas) will never change his mind but Lady Gaga can change the perception that an "outcast" has of himself, and that's a very big help and a very big change. I think that old prejudices are hard to eliminate but Lady Gaga helps everyone who suffered because of these prejudices to love themselves, to be proud of themselves, to fight against hate and that's what I call a big change.
