My name is Cintia and this is a story about an artist that I admire! It’s about how Lady Gaga gave me strength to exist when the world wanted me to hide.
It all started in 2009. I was a confused teenager, living under a roof where there was love, yet not the freedom to be who I wanted to be. I was raised by an open minded mom, however my dad couldn’t be more different, he was strict, manipulative and had a lot of prejudice towards the LGBTQIAPN+ community. Coming out as a lesbian seemed a loneliness verdict.
That’s when Gaga came in! 🥹
Authentic, brave, unique! She was the first person who showed me, even for afar, that there was pride in being who you are. At the age of 14, I made some money by grooming my neighbors’ dogs just so I could get hold of a sample of the most famous girly teen magazine at the time, which came with a Gaga’s poster! I sticked it next to the mirror in my bedroom and used to chant to myself: “You’re not alone!”. It was my lucky charm, my amulet.
In 2011, Born this way became my prayer, my motto. I would close my eyes and feel it all in my chest: “I was born this way, and that’s okay”. At the age of 16, I got a peace symbol tattooed on my wrist, just like Gaga’s, on the very same spot. My mom had to sign a permit for the tattoo artist, for my dad’s rage. But there was...
