Do you think Lady Gaga will be instrumental in telling very disturbed people that they are fine?
I think that Lady Gaga will help people to confront issues that they have via the intense and awesome power of music. In particular, I think Just Dance has the potential to help alcoholics recover from their disease by showing them that even "normal" people are sympathetic and can definitely relate at least a little bit. Go Gaga!
I really hope that isn't past her musical spectrum, considering she's been having a more upbeat feeling with Born This Way. But I think, songs like "So Happy I Could Die" could have potentially more effective, if the message was a bit more upfront. The line "Be your best friend and I'll love you forever, up in the clouds we'll be higher togehter, so happy I could die" obviously addresses the issue of drug/alcohol abuse, but it isn't necessarily understand by the first listen.
Omar, you're definitely right. I think that Lady Gaga should produce a song about self-medication that surveys the potential negative outcomes of this particular psychiatric strategy.
I think she can because she’s built such an honest relationship with her fans, that they are now able to realize that she’s more than just the music. In many ways, it gives her fans an opportunity to look past the surface of mainstream, and find the real anguish and pain that she’s singing about. For instance, I was severely depressed in high school because I felt like my parents never gave me any guidance, my brothers always rejected my interests, so I turned to self-medication to fill the emptiness left by all that neglect. I drank and did drugs almost every day but after listening to the Fame Monster, there was something really real about that album and it just stuck a nerve with me. It honestly affected me more than the Fame did because I could relate to those eight songs in so many ways. I mean that album truly symbolizes all the issues that public figures go through that they are either ashamed, or afraid to talk about because of the way it will affect their career. Alcoholism, drug abuse/dependency, sexual frustration, death, hurt… they’re all things that can potentially change someone’s life.
